The Premier League reached a cumulative global audience of over 3.2 billion people during the 2020/21 season, an increase of 6% compared to the previous year. The world’s most-watched sports league is only getting bigger after signing major rights deals with companies like Amazon. But the Premier League is unique compared to the other biggest sports leagues. The NBA, NFL, and MLB all stand alone in their respective sports. In terms of revenue, the NBA is almost eleven times bigger than the second most successful basketball league in China.

But football is different. 11 of the 17 most lucrative sports leagues in the world are football leagues but the Premier League eclipses them all. The league took in £4.827 billion in revenue in 2017/18 according to The Guardian. That is a great deal more than the Spanish La Liga in second at £3.86 billion. The Premier League has been a massive success since its 1992 launch and here are some of the reasons why.
